Doubles champions were crowned at the second annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony on Saturday, after the No. 3 seed American duo of Jacqueline Cako and Sanaz Marand dominated the top seeded team of Ukrainian Anastasia Kharchenko and Russian Nika Kukharchuk 6-1, 6-2. This was Cako’s third ITF doubles title and Marand’s fourth.
Also on Saturday, the singles main draw final was set as two unseeded players, Marand and Serbian qualifier Vojislava Lukic, ousted the top two seeds. The singles final will be held 11 a.m. Sunday on the clay courts at the Sea Colony Tennis Center in Bethany Beach, Delaware.
In a battle of southpaws, Marand advanced by ousting the tournament’s top seed, American Alexis King, in an exciting three set match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The 23-year-old Marand hopes to claim her first career ITF singles title on Sunday.
Lukic, 25, defeated No. 2 Kharchenko, to reach the finals. The battle between these European pros seemed like a forgone conclusion after a 6-2 first set victory for Lukic. But, Kharchenko roared back with inspired play in the second set to take Lukic into a tie-break situation, which went back and forth until Lukic claimed a 7-6 (7) tie-break win. Lukic now aims for her first singles victory since 2007.
