The Indian River Inlet Bridge is set to open on Memorial Day Weekend, according to Coastal Point, ending years of construction and anticipation.

A dedication for the new bridge, which will also be named the Charles W. Cullen Bridge, will take place Sunday, May 6 with special guests Gov. Jack Markell, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper and more expected to attend. The public is also encouraged to come out to take a look at the finished product before it becomes a four-lane functional roadway on the popular holiday weekend.

As for the expected Memorial Day reopening, the Coastal Point says:

“DelDOT officials said they hope to open all four lanes of traffic on the new bridge by Memorial Day, on a rapidly approaching deadline. Bridge lighting was also expected to be functional in May.

Bridge contractor Skanska Civil Southeast is very close to completing construction activities on the bridge and its environs, including reattaching the sand bypass system that aids the natural movement of sand and tides across the inlet. The sand bypass system must be attached to the new bridge before the old bridge is demolished.

As they finish the final work, from cleanup to light bulb replacement, crews will continue cleaning the construction site and leaving. Meanwhile, DelDOT will complete inspections and inventories, to make sure the State received what it ordered.”

This will come as great news to those incoming travelers from the North, who will see a much improved roadway and a less-cluttered journey as they head into North Bethany for their beach vacations.

This summer, Bethany Beach will begin to offer free wi-fi access on its beach, boardwalk and bandstand as reported by Delawareonline.com.

The connection on the boardwalk and bandstand areas will be available year-round, while access to it on the beach will be in-season only.

Residents and vacationers alike should find this to be a great addition to the popular resort area. With the growing popularity of smartphones, tablets and e-readers, people are spending more of their down time using their mobile devices. This addition gives them the opportunity to utilize them while enjoying the sun and sand.

Just another reason to come visit one of the best places to be – Bethany Beach!

Delaware beach and tennis resort community also among Tennis Magazine’s 2012 Top 50 American Resorts  – including #3 in the Mid-Atlantic

Sea Colony, Bethany Beach, Delaware – May 1, 2012 – Located just south of Bethany Beach, Delaware, Sea Colony – known as “The Premier Family Beach & Tennis Resort Community” – remains among the world’s elite tennis camps, according to Tennis Resorts Online’s 2012 rankings released today.

TennisResortsOnline.com (TRO), published by former Tennis Magazine editor Roger Cox, ranked the seaside resort the world’s No. 13 tennis camp, as well as No. 4 for best overall children’s programs and No. 5 for best junior programs. The southern Delaware beach and tennis community is also among TRO’s top 50 tennis resorts.

The annual rankings, now in their 13th year, are determined by tennis players, who were asked to evaluate resorts and camps in more than 20 categories, from the quality of the tennis programs to lodging and restaurants to value. This recent global recognition adds to the decades of local, regional and national honors earned by the resort community and its tennis staff.

With 34 tennis courts, including four indoor and 14 Har-Tru clay, Sea Colony Tennis, under Tennis Director Thomas Johnston, offers a wide range of camps, clinics and private instruction to tennis players of all ages and skill levels.

Supported by the Sea Colony homeowners, the tennis program has produced state and national champions, elite juniors and top collegiate tennis players, while earning kudos from state and regional tennis organizations.

Earlier this year, Tennis Magazine honored the resort community among its 2012 Top 50 American Resorts, as well as ranking Sea Colony the No. 3 resort in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In addition to its world-class tennis offerings, Sea Colony, which is professionally managed by ResortQuest Delaware, features a wide variety of amenities including a half mile of private beach, 12 pools (two indoor), fitness centers, activities for all ages, community shuttle, year-round security and wireless Internet access.

is for Justin’s Beach House. The colorful house that catches everyone’s eye on Route 24 with the large turquoise beach chair in front is home to recipients of generosity from the Justin W. Jennings Foundation.

The foundation was set up in memory of Justin Jennings, a Delaware native who enjoyed time in Bethany Beach to escape his ongoing battle with cancer, which he succumbed to in 2000.

In 2005,  the Foundation partnered with Contractors for a Cause and built a gorgeous beach home that served as a station to cancer patients looking to make the same beach escape Justin did years ago.

You can learn more about Justin’s Beach House and the Justin W. Jennings Foundation by visiting http://justinjennings.org/

The Wave is reporting that the Cultural and Historic Affairs Committee is seeking summer volunteers to serve as museum docents.

Anyone interested in volunteering should attend an orientation seminar next week in the foyer of Town Hall, located at the intersection of Garfield Parkway and Route 1.

From The Wave:

This year, the committee decided to change its hours of operation. Docents will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays in May and June and from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday during July and August.

“Particularly during the summertime when a lot of people are here, we have docents to sit in the museum to keep (it) open,” said Councilwoman Carol Olmstead, who also serves as chair of the CHAC. “We decided that the weekends are kind of busy and people are arriving and leaving and maybe during the week would be a better time.”

An orientation has been scheduled for 2 p.m. April 23 to give potential volunteers time to get acquainted with the exhibits and the museum, Olmstead said.
