Bethany Beach, Del. was recently named one of the “Best Secret Beaches on Earth” by Travel and Leisure magazine and one of their “Favorite Family Beaches.”

U.S. Sen. Thomas Carper (D-Del.) was in town on April 6 to start the Easter weekend by highlighting Bethany’s international recognition with help from Bethany Beach Mayor Tony McClenney and Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carrie Subity.

With a group of beachgoers stopping to observe the event, Carper jokingly said, “I thought this was supposed to be a secret,” before he noted that this wasn’t the first time Delaware beaches have been recognized.

Last July, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach were honored by Delaware officials following the release of a National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) report that named them as “superstar” beaches. They were featured nationally following a review of U.S. beaches that rated them based on various criteria, including beach water quality and the level of protection offered to beachgoers through notifications about water quality.

Rehoboth and Dewey were two of only four beaches, among 200 beaches nationwide, to be awarded recognition above and beyond five-star status from the NRDC, a non-partisan international environmental advocacy group.

Now, it’s Bethany’s turn in the spotlight.

David Keeps of Travel and Leisure magazine wrote of the town, “A boardwalk with a bandstand and a frozen custard shop, a landmark carved totem pole, and a sophisticated miniature golf course add up to an all-American destination — and one of T+L’s Favorite Family Beaches.

“Known as the Quiet Resorts, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island offer seven miles of Atlantic Ocean for swimming, as well as a sheltered bay for boating and fishing, minus the hubbub of nearby towns Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Ocean City, Md.”

Carper spoke of the other things Delaware is known for, such as agriculture and its chemical industry, but he said tourism is a frontrunner in what the state has to offer.

“And it starts and ends with the beaches,” he said. Giving a nod to several people who had stopped to listen – both sets of families from cities in Maryland – he said, “They came here for this, not chicken or the Nylon industry.”

McClenny said he “didn’t even know [Bethany Beach] was here in 1982,” and 12 years ago, came to “spend a week.” Now, he’s a full-time resident and the town’s mayor.

He thanked the senator for his help with beach replenishment, surmising that in recent years replenishment has helped the town avoid another storm of ’62, the infamous Ash Wednesday storm that wiped out nearly every beachfront structure in the town and that – for those who were there – remains in the forefront of their minds as a once-in-a-lifetime storm experience.

Replenishment and construction of a new dune have already been credited with preventing damage in more recent storms.

Subity thanked the senator for helping to recognize “our wonderful secret beach.”

A new multi-sport event will take place this September to benefit the first responders of the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company.

The Bethany Beach First Responders Sprinternational Triathlon-Duathlon, a USA Triathlon-sanctioned event, will be held Sept. 23. Registration is now open, and early registers are eligible to win lottery-style giveaways.

The triathlon will feature a 1,000-meter ocean swim, a 30K bike ride and a 7K run, while the duathlon will be a 1K beach run, a 30K bike run and a 7K run.

Director Rick Hundley said after the Make-A-Wish Foundation announced it was moving its annual triathlon from Sea Colony to Cambridge, Md., he was inundated with emails and calls about replacing the event.

Organizers weren’t trying to deter people from attending the Make-A-Wish event, but allow for a 27-year tradition to continue, he said.

“We think Bethany Beach is a great venue for a triathlon and duathlon,” Hundley said. “There’s not many triathlons where you can do an open ocean swim.”

The transition area for swimmers will be on Garfield Parkway and Atlantic Avenue, which is a great way to get the community involved, Hundley said.

The bike and run will encompass Bethany, North Bethany, the Indian River Inlet Bridge and South Bethany. The finish line will be at the Bandstand on the Boardwalk.

“When you put a triathlon in the town like that it gets the spectators that have never witnessed a triathlon,” he said. “I think its great exposure for the sport, health and fitness.”

Partnering with the fire company was “a good fit,” Hundley said, as it will raise awareness about the services the BBVFC and its first responders provide to the community.

“We are excited to bring this new event to the area and to donate the proceeds to such terrific organizations,” said Ernie Felici, race producer. “We are confident that locals and guests, and local businesses, will rally for our first responders.”

Finishing and age group medals will be awarded. There will also be a post-race party.

Race packet pick-up, which will feature a pasta dinner buffet, a sports expo and a health fair for all athletes and their guests, will be at the BBVFC from 4-8 p.m., Sept. 22. Tickets for the pasta dinner will be available for $12 for adults and $5 children under 10.

Monte Wisbrock, president of the BBVFC, said he’s thankful for the organizers, and those who will participate.

“Only with support like this are we able to serve the community,” he said.

Help us list the many things that make Bethany Beach and its surrounding towns (Fenwick Island, Ocean View, Millville, etc.) a great place to be – from “A” to “Z”!

We would love to have as many entries as possible for each letter, so feel free to add to our list by leaving a reply under the post.

is for the Indian River Inlet, the connector of the Indain River Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. By crossing south over the Indian River Inlet Bridge, visitors from the north enter the beautiful area of North Bethany and eventually the rest of coastal Southern Delaware.

The Indian River Bay is where you’ll find residents and visitors alike boating, fishing, shellfishing, and crabbing to their heart’s desire.

The new Indian River Inlet Bridge was completed this past winter and is looking to be fully operational by the time summer hits.

Tell us more about your experiences on the Indian River Bay, or Inlet and let your voice be heard in the comments section about what I-related places or things remind you of the Bethany Beach/Fenwick Island areas.

On Saturday, April 7, beginning at 1 p.m., rain or shine, the Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt in Cupola Park. Children between the ages of 3 and 10 will have the opportunity to scour for 6,000 eggs hidden throughout the town park.

“They’ll be gone in less than three minutes,” predicted Chamber Coordinator Amy Simmons, with a laugh. “It’s real quick.”

There will be three age groups for kids to participate in various age-appropriate games during the day.

“They’ll be an egg roll for the little kids. There will be an egg relay for the older kids, and for the oldest of kids, they’ll be doing sack races,” said Simmons.

There will also be a bonnet/hat-decorating contest, which will be judged by Chamber members, with prizes in three categories: most original, most creative and funniest.

“We would like to have the kids decorate hats prior to coming. It can be a bonnet. It can be a cap for a boy. And then we’re going to do a small parade in an area down by Cupola Park and have them judged.

Simmons added that a number of prizes will be awarded to the winners, including Shorebirds tickets and passes to CoCo’s Funhouse.

“We do have some really nice prizes this year to be given away. Two golden eggs in each age group – there are prizes for that – and we’ve got prizes for the hat contest.”

The event is free and open to the public. For a $5 charge, though, kids can get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, who will be making a special appearance to greet the children.

“There will be pictures taken with the Easter bunny that people can take home with them that day.”

Simmons said that, last year more than 150 children participated in the hunt. She said she hopes more people will attend this year and participate in the family-friendly event.

“We had an awesome turnout,” she said of the 2011 event. “There were so many people, and most of the kids had at least one parent with them. Everyone was really thrilled with how organized it was and how smooth everything ran.

Local Civil War historian Tom Ryan will present the first talk of a two-part series titled “The Impact of the Civil War in Cities and Towns Across America” at the South Coastal Library on Thursday, April 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“We try and categorize our programs with umbrellas, and these talks are part of the history series,” said Priscilla Scott, circulation coordinator and publicist for the library. “Tom Ryan is very, very popular. We could have as much as 80 people come to one of his presentations.”

The two presentations will feature 12 different locations and include photos, prints and paintings to help illustrate Ryan’s talks.

“This series, I don’t believe he’s presented this anywhere before. He has written about it. But it’s the impact of the Civil War on towns, and it will follow a chronological program,” she said. “He’ll start with a series beginning in Pennsylvania and then in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida — he kind of goes around the way the war and the battles took place. I think that will be of great interest to people.”

In the first presentation, Ryan will discuss towns in Georgia, Texas, Alabama and Pennsylvania. The second talk, which will be held on May 3, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., will discuss towns in Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Alabama.

Scott noted that Ryan has given talks at the library before, and they were all very well received.

“The last time he did a series of presentations, it was on espionage,” she recalled. “I just think there’s a fascination with the Civil War and, of course, last year was the sesquicentennial, and that brought on even more interest, I think. He’s really a big draw. He has a reputation around here, and the people in this area have quite an interest in the Civil War.”

The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

Scott added that Ryan – who has contributed to various publications, including the Washington Times, as well as his regular column in the Coastal Point – has done exorbitant amounts of research on the Civil War.

“He just brings a fresh insight in on the Civil War, because he has done so much research on it and he’s a real expert. He went to these different places in order to do the research. So he’s doing sort of a firsthand account. He’s not just reading books and the like. He went, going to the places and interviewed different people. I think it’ll be a really wonderful program.”

For more information, call the South Coastal Library at (302) 539-5231 or visit the Web site at www.southcoastal.lib.de.us. The South Coastal Library is located at 43 Kent Avenue in Bethany Beach.
