Coastal Delaware and Maryland are set for some of the area’s most prominent events at the top of the calendar, as the annual ocean plunge events in Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach, Delaware, and Ocean City, Maryland set the stage for 2013.
Exercise Like the Eskimos in Downtown Bethany Beach coincides with the Leo Brady Hair of the Dog 5K/10K race. On New Year’s Day, runners will take their marks at 9:30 a.m. and run through beautiful Bethany Beach before ending their journey oceanfront at the Bethany Beach Bandstand. There, they can cool off by taking part in the Eskimo Swim at noon. Proceeds from the event benefit various local nonprofits and provide grants and scholarships to local students. The Atlantic General Hospital Penguin Swim is Ocean City’s 19th annual foray into the winter sea. This New Year’s Day event supports the resort-area not-for-profit hospital and takes place on 91st Street at 1 p.m. Following the swim there will be an awards ceremony at the Princess Royale Atrium. In Rehoboth Beach, it’s the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge taking place Saturday, February 3. Raising funds for Special Olympics Delaware, this event has become one of Delaware’s most anticipated and attended fundraising events.
This year’s Plunge Festival will feature two new events. The Pooch Plunge, where dogs can take a plunge themselves, will take place at 11 a.m. The Polar Ice Cream Throwdown will run from noon to 5 p.m. and will be a taste test and vote for the best “polar-inspired” ice cream created by attendees. The winner will have their creation featured at King’s Ice Cream in Lewes all summer. Learn more about this event at http://www.plungede.org
