Help us list the many things that make Bethany Beach and its surrounding towns (Fenwick Island, Ocean View, Millville, etc.) a great place to be – from “A” to “Z”!

We would love to have as many entries as possible for each letter, so feel free to add to our list by leaving a reply in our comments section (click on the top right link to “add comments”).

is for Umbrella. No, we’re not shielding ourselves from the rain with the umbrellas we’re speaking of. We’re talking about the massive umbrellas that protect families from the summer sun!

Come to Bethany Beach anytime in the summer months and witness the variety of colors and styles of beach umbrellas that pepper the sand.

Next to the crashing waves and sizzling sun, what more represents the scene of a beach afternoon, than the beach umbrella? Not to mention, along with sunscreen, it’s a vital part of protection from harmful sunrays.

And go on and admit it, there’s always something a little humorous in watching someone’s umbrella fall down or start blowing away. Secure those things, folks!

U is a very tough letter to represent, so if you have anything to add to the conversation, let us know by clicking on the comment link on the top right of the post!

The summer of 2012 will be laid to rest this weekend, as the annual Bethany Beach Jazz Festival takes place on Monday, September 3.

This event has been a tradition in the Bethany area since 1985, as locals and visitors remaining from the Labor Day Weekend festivities come together on the boardwalk to “mourn” the end of the summer by simulating a New Orleans-styled funeral parade. Marchers will carry a casket down the boardwalk with “summer” inside, trailed by 3 Dixieland jazz bands.

A silent auction in conjunction with the event will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at Bethany Blues in Bethany. Proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life program.
